STORRS, Conn. — UConn Extension connects the power of UConn research to local issues by creating practical, science-based answers to complex problems. Extension provides scientific knowledge and expertise to the public in areas such as: economic viability, nutrition and health, community development, agriculture, and natural resources. UConn Extension is in all 169 towns, with no fewer than 11 programs in each, and over 22 programs in some towns.
We are offering numerous workshops and trainings for farmers in February and March.
Solid Ground Farmer trainings are designed to strengthen our farms across Connecticut. Trainings are based on input from beginning farmers and UConn Extension’s recent experience with beginning farmers. All workshops are free and open to anyone interested in attending. February topics include soil health and management, fruit production for small scale farming, vegetable production for small scale farming, and growing crops in low, high, and moveable tunnels. Pests and Diseases of Small Fruit is a workshop being offered in three different locations – Torrington, Haddam, and Brooklyn – by Extension educators Mary Concklin and Joan Allen. Topics include grapes, strawberries, bramble, blueberries, currants, and gooseberry. More information is available at: http://plant.lab.uconn.edu/workshops/
Food Safety training is being offered in March on the produce safety alliance, and Good Agricultural Practices by Extension educator Diane Wright Hirsch. All trainings will be held at the Extension Center in Haddam. Dates and full schedules are located on http://extension.uconn.edu.
The spring bedding plant meetings are once again being hosted in Vernon and Torrington by Extension educators Leanne Pundt and Rosa Raudales. The Torrington session will also include an overview of Worker Protection Standards. More information and the workshop agendas are available at http://extension.uconn.edu.
