AMES, Iowa — The Iowa Learning Farms (ILF) conservation webinar taking place Aug. 14 at noon CDT will feature Pete Moore, adjunct assistant professor, natural resource ecology and management, Iowa State University. Moore is a geomorphologist who studies the erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment across the landscape, with a focus on river corridors.
In the webinar, “Phosphorus Exchanges Between a River and its Floodplain,” Moore will provide highlights and data from an ongoing study aimed at quantifying the inputs and outputs of sediment and sediment-borne phosphorus (P) in the Nishnabotna River watershed located in southwest Iowa. He will present key results to date and what they suggest about opportunities and constraints for P management. Moore will also discuss the processes by which phosphorus is transported between water and floodplains.
“Our research team has been working to identify how phosphorus can be better managed through non-point source nutrient reduction efforts,” said Moore. “River corridors can be both a non-point source of P and through natural floodplain processes, a non-point sink for P. We are hopeful that better understanding of the potential re-deposition and storage of these nutrients can contribute to both better water quality and on-farm nutrient management benefits.”
Participants are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
